Arkipelago - The Floating Paradise
Arkipelago is Kae’s take on floating utopian cities. Sharp towers, suspended gardens, comfy villas and a whole functioning infrastructure make this project work like no other. Work of half a decade already, Arkipelago is expected to reach completion in 2021.
It all started with a dream. I was trying my best to absorb as much knowledge as possible from Zaha Hadid’s buildings, and hoping to one day create something that could be as satisfying and breathtaking to visit and experience. Arkipelago came from a very simple idea : What would happen if global warming forced mankind off the land? Following classes about building boats at my architecture school, I thought of building a city made out of connected floating hulls. The entire city is designed like a net. Each island balances itself by pushing and pulling on the neighboring ones.
Every single building on this project is unique. The layout was created piece by piece, in order to keep a coherent and cohesive urban design, while keeping the signature organic shapes. A monorail and a train circle around the platform, assuring that every area is well distributed and evenly accessible. Every island features docks, and boats can move around freely in the entire city. To insure sustainability, food is cultivated in Biodomes, large greenhouses providing plants with adequate lighting, venting and protection from outside weather. This makes possible growing plants from exotic climates, in the middle of the sea.
